With the explosive growth in mobile devices and the emergence of the "Internet of Things", the need for IP addresses has become even more prevalent than ever in today’s fast changing environment.

With IPv4 running out, the growth of Internet and its related applications can only be supported by IPv6. IPv6 offers 340 trillion trillion trillion Internet addresses, and with it a hugely exciting range of features that you can use to transform and improve your enterprise.

To support business continuity and to tackle IPv4 exhaustion, many companies have started planning for IPv6. Although IPv6 transition has started to accelerate, companies tend to lack awareness or ignore IPv6 security aspects. IPv6 is enabled by default on over half of the world's desktop operating systems. Companies on IPv4-only networks might not realise that IPv6 traffic unknowingly exists in the networks and can be exploited if due care is not taken. In light of rising cyber security threats, it is imperative for businesses to be aware of IPv6 security vulnerabilities and the mitigation measures to safely adopt IPv6.

Singapore is now one of the leading countries in terms of IPv6 user penetration rate as measured by APNIC. As we expect to have a lot of people connecting over IPv6 across the region, it is essential that companies should plan now for IPv6 to stay ahead.

IPv6 Conference 2014

The IPv6 conference, organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), is a one-day event aimed at CxOs, Business Managers, Directors, Technology Movers and Shakers. It aims to provide practical knowledge on how you can leverage IPv6 to future proof and enhance your business.

The event will explore some of the technology trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) and explain why IPv6 will be their key enabler.

IDA’s very own “IPv6 Security Mobile Lab” will be showcased to demonstrate the IPv6 security vulnerabilities and the mitigation measures to secure the networks. In light of rising cyber security threats, businesses need to plan early and consider the inherent risks that IPv6 can bring into the network as most of the latest equipment or appliances support IPv6 by default.

Costs being one of the major factors, enterprise should look to deploy IPv6 during refresh cycle and ensure that the infrastructure can handle IPv6. We will be sharing how businesses can enjoy tax deductions/allowances under the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) scheme from IRAS.
